Hey Weekenders 🏈

Super Bowl weekend is finally here, and South Jersey is running on a dangerous combo of wing orders, box pools, and “who’s bringing what dip?” energy. Whether you’re team Couch, team Watch Party, or team “find a bar with a giant TV and let’s yell together,” this issue has you covered. We’ve rounded up big events happening before kickoff, pulled together SJW staff picks for the best wings in South Jersey, and even ranked our all‑time favorite halftime shows so you’ve got something to debate between commercials. Think of this as your little game‑day game plan for the next few days—built by locals, for locals, so you can spend less time scrolling and more time actually enjoying the weekend.

Top Events

🏈 Super Bowl Sunday – Wherever You’re Watching

Sunday, February 8 - Kickoff around 6:30 PM
However you’re watching the Big Game this year—on your couch, at a friend’s watch party, or packed into a loud South Jersey bar—it’s basically an unofficial holiday. At home means full control of the snacks, the sound, and the remote, plus you can actually hear the commercials and halftime show. A house watch party is for the social butterflies: more food, more people, and way more chaos in the best way. And if you want the full “big game energy,” a bar gives you wall‑to‑wall TVs, DJ‑level volume, and a room full of strangers high‑fiving like they’ve known each other for years.

Hitting your Super Bowl box pools adds a little extra chaos and excitement, especially for the people who don’t usually care who’s on the field. Even if your numbers never hit, you’ve still got the real star of the night: the commercials, from the ridiculous celebrity cameos to the “we’ll be talking about this at work tomorrow” spots. At home you can actually hear every joke; at a bar or party you get that group laugh and groan when a commercial either absolutely lands or totally flops.

Top 10 Super Bowl Halftime Performances

When the SJW (South Jersey Weekender) staff started arguing about the best Super Bowl halftime performances of all time, things got loud fast. After way too many YouTube replays and “no, you’re wrong” moments, we averaged out our personal rankings into one master list. Is it scientific? Absolutely not. Is it a fun starting point for your own halftime debates at the party? Definitely.

Prince – 2007 (Super Bowl XLI)
Purple lights, pouring rain, and “Purple Rain” in an actual storm—this one feels more like a movie scene than a halftime show.

Michael Jackson – 1993 (Super Bowl XXVII)
The blueprint. MJ stood still for what felt like forever, and the crowd just kept getting louder before he launched into hit after hit.

Beyoncé – 2013 (Super Bowl XLVII)
Bey basically turned the stadium into her personal stage, shut the lights off (literally, almost), and squeezed a Destiny’s Child reunion into 12 minutes.

U2 – 2002 (Super Bowl XXXVI)
U2’s set turned into a tribute, with the names of 9/11 victims scrolling behind them—emotional, simple, and one of the rare goosebump halftime shows.

Shakira & Jennifer Lopez – 2020 (Super Bowl LIV)
Wall‑to‑wall energy, dancing for days, and a full Latin pop party that barely took a breath the entire time.

Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige & Kendrick Lamar – 2022 (Super Bowl LVI)
An all‑star hip‑hop lineup doing a mini nostalgia tour with a set that looked like a block party dropped in the middle of the field.

Lady Gaga – 2017 (Super Bowl LI)
Gaga started on the roof, jumped into the stadium, and never really came back down—costumes, choreography, and vocals all dialed to 10.

Bruno Mars (with Red Hot Chili Peppers) – 2014 (Super Bowl XLVIII)
Bruno made the whole thing feel like one long jam session—tight band, big horns, and a ton of fun without needing a million guests.

Katy Perry (with Missy Elliott & Lenny Kravitz) – 2015 (Super Bowl XLIX)
She rode in on a giant lion, gave us Left Shark, and let Missy come out and steal the last few minutes in the best way.

Rihanna – 2023 (Super Bowl LVII)
Rihanna floated on glowing platforms, ran through a greatest‑hits set, and casually revealed a pregnancy mid‑performance like it was no big deal.

Top 7 Wings in South Jersey

Just in time for the Big Game, the SJW (South Jersey Weekender) crew put together our staff picks for the best wings in South Jersey. We haven’t hit every single spot (yet), but we’ve put in plenty of research—call it years of “field work” in bars, taverns, and takeout joints all over the area. Think of this as a living list of places we actually crave when it’s game day, snow day, or “I can’t cook tonight” day.

Jug Handle Inn – Cinnaminson
The Jug is classic South Jersey wing territory: crispy, saucy, and just messy enough that you’re glad you wore dark colors. Their sauces hit all the moods—from straightforward hot to fun flavors—and the bar‑room vibe makes it feel like game day even when there’s no game on.

Whistler’s Inn – Cinnaminson
Whistler’s is one of those spots where the wings come out and everyone at the table suddenly gets quiet. Big, meaty wings, dependable heat, and that old‑school, wood‑paneled bar feel that just works for football, beer, and arguing over calls.

Pic‑A‑Lilli Inn – Shamong
Pic‑A‑Lilli is a South Jersey wing pilgrimage spot—if you know, you know. Their wings are the opposite of fussy: crispy skin, addictive sauces, and baskets that disappear faster than you meant them to, especially if you’re sharing around the table.

HOB Tavern – Bordentown
HOB gives you that cozy neighborhood‑bar energy with wings that feel way more dialed‑in than you’d expect from a corner tavern. The sauces are bold without being over the top, and it’s the kind of place where you grab a stool, order a round, and suddenly you’ve been there through the whole second half.

Cheessteaks – Merchantville
Cheessteaks is already getting a rep for its sandwiches, but the wings—especially the strawberry hot honey—are real problem‑solvers when a craving hits. That sauce tastes like classic hot honey that wandered through a strawberry patch: sweet, a little fruity, and just spicy enough that you keep going back for “one more” until the tray mysteriously disappears.

Bricco – Westmont/Cherry Hill
You might go to Bricco thinking “pizza night,” but the wings deserve just as much hype. They come out with serious crisp, great char, and flavors that hold their own next to all the other carb‑heavy goodness on the table.

Dom’s Tavern – Bellmawr
Dom’s has that true local‑tavern feel, and the wings match the vibe: straightforward, delicious, and perfect with a cold beer. It’s the kind of spot where you end up talking to the regulars, ordering another round, and realizing these wings just quietly became your new favorite.

And that’s the Weekender for this weekend! ❄️
However you’re watching the game this year—solo on the couch, packed into a living room, or yelling at TVs with strangers at a South Jersey bar—I hope you find a little joy in the chaos. Hit your box pools, enjoy the halftime show, and don’t forget to support the local spots that make weekends (and wing orders) way more fun.

If you check out any of the events or wing picks from this issue, reply and tell me what you thought—or send your own favorites so we can keep this list growing. And if you’ve got a friend who’s always asking “What’s going on this weekend?”, forward this along and help them join the crew.
